Newly Solo K-Pop Star Dawn Debuts on World Digital Song Sales Chart With ‘Money’
It's a new day on the K-pop scene today as Dawn, formerly E'Dawn of Pentagon, makes his debut on the charts just over a year after departing his former boy band and record label.
It’s a new day on the K-pop scene today as Dawn makes his debut on the charts just over a year after departing his former boy band and record label.
Formerly known as E’Dawn during his time as a member of Pentagon, the newly solo Dawn sends his debut single “Money” to Billboard‘s World Digital Song Sales chart at No. 11 on the chart dated Nov. 16, 2019. While this is his first entry on his own under his new moniker, Dawn had previously bowed on World Digital Song Sales four times as a part of two different acts.
Dawn scored two songs during his time with Pentagon with singles he helped write and produce in “Shine” (which hit No. 6 on the chart in 2018, the band’s peak so far) and “Naughty Boy” (which peaked at No. 7 that same year). Dawn also entered the charts twice as a member of Triple H, a collaboration trio between himself, his former Pentagon band mate Hui and K-pop diva HyunA, with the threesome earning two entries with their 2017 debut single “365 Fresh” (that peaked at No. 7) and a 2018 single “Retro Future” (No. 16).
After leaving his label home of Cube Entertainment in the fall of 2018 alongside girlfriend HyunA after the two went public with their relationship, Dawn and his girlfriend released their first singles under PSY‘s newly established P NATION label on the same day. No doubt helpful to stir up additional interest in both their releases, both Dawn and HyunA bowed on the charts with the latter’s comeback single “Flower Shower” landing slightly above her boyfriend at No. 6.
As PSY previously opened up to Billboard in an exclusive about his new label and Dawn’s solo career, the melodic rap-singing the “Gangnam Style” star teased of his new signee shines fully through on “Money.” Co-produced and written by PSY and Dawn, the single has a trap-pop beat that has a mainstream accessibility but honors Dawn’s love of quirky melodies and hooks previously showcased in his past work.
P NATION can now claim Billboard chart hits for all three of the first artists signed with the company. Rapper-singer Jessi was the first P NATION release with “Who Dat B” (which led her to reach a new career peak on World Digital Song Sales), and now HyunA and Dawn have both made their bows. The company now also represents singer R&B singer Crush after striking a deal this summer.
